Adopting a Shelter Cat

Are you considering adopting a cat? If so, this is a great month to do it. June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month! While there may only be a few weeks left until July, shelter cats always need help. This year, however, the situation of many kitties in shelters is especially critical. A local Lexington, KY vet discusses adopting shelter cats below.

Adopting from a shelter offers some wonderful advantages. For one thing, you’ll be giving Fluffy a new lease on life. This is a small act of kindness, but one that can change both your life and your new pet’s! Of course, adopting from a shelter also benefits that shelter’s other pets. You’ll be freeing up space and supporting them financially. You may also save some money. Plus, you’ll know that you’re doing something to support your local community and promote good animal welfare. It’s truly a wonderful feeling to know you saved an animal’s life!

Finding Fluffy

There certainly is no shortage of adorable felines who are in desperate need of good homes. In many cases, you may be able to look at adoptable pets online, but still meet Fluffy in ‘purrson’ before finalizing everything. When you are looking for that one special kitty that tugs at your heartstring, don’t overlook the less adoptable pets, like that sweet senior cat or the one with the crooked ears. Those unwanted kitties sometimes make the best pets, just because they are so grateful to their saviors.

Getting Ready

Have everything ready before you bring your feline pal home. Your shopping list should include toys, treats, food, dishes, a litterbox and litter, a carrier, and a comfy bed. Fluffy will also appreciate a scratching post or board, and perhaps some kitty furniture, such as a cat tower. If you have other pets, put her things in a separate area, like a spare room, at first. It’s important to introduce your furry pals gradually!

Purr Activation

Many cats get very frightened and anxious during major changes. Don’t be surprised if Fluffy seems a bit shy or uneasy at first. She may also sleep a lot as she recoups from the trauma of being in a shelter. Just focus on offering great care. You’ll get that motor going before you know it!
