Shelter Dog Birthday Ideas

Today is a pretty special day for many of our clients: it’s DOGust, or the official birthday for shelter dogs. We think that all dogs deserve loving homes, and we’re always happy to see pups getting second chances. If you got your canine companion from a shelter, you definitely have our support! And, since you probably don’t know when Fido was born, this is a great time to celebrate his unbirthday. A Lexington, KY vet lists some ways to honor this pawesome occasion below.

Treats

If there’s one thing that’s bound to get Fido’s tail going, it’s a yummy snack. Get your pooch some doggy ice cream. You can also offer him some plain, cooked meat, fish, or chicken, without the skin, bones, or fat.

Toys

Toys are very fun for Fido, but they’re also quite important for him, both mentally and physically. Dogs all have their own tastes when it comes to playthings. Some pups like squeaky toys, some like tennis balls, and some prefer puzzle toys. Get your four-legged pal some of each!

Water Fun

Does your canine pal like to go swimming? Take Fido to a pet-friendly pool or swimming pool! Or, get your furry best friend a kiddie pool, and let him splash around in that. Just put your pet’s safety first: always supervise your dog closely near water, and never leave him unattended.

Bath

We know, Fido would happily drag this one off the list and bury it deep in the backyard. However, no matter what your four-legged friend thinks of doggy bath time, he’ll be more comfortable with clean, soft fur. (If possible, take him outdoors, and bathe him in the kiddie pool mentioned above.)

Adventures

There’s no better way to commemorate this special occasion than by going on a special trip. Take Fido to a new park, or visit one of his favorite trails. Safety first, though: make sure your furry buddy is fixed, microchipped, and current on his vaccines and parasite control. He should also be wearing ID tags.

Photos

Cute photos are a must! Snap some adorable shots of Fido living his best life. Share your favorites on social media. Who knows? Maybe you’ll inspire someone else to adopt a shelter dog!
